The Second Station: Jesus bears His Cross
As
the redeemed of the Lord we are called to walk in the footsteps
of the humble, cross-bearing Christ. Each of us has his daily
cross to bear to be worthy to share our Saviour's glory.
After
beating and mocking Jesus, the soldiers present him with the
instrument of his impending destruction—the cross. He accepts
it with love.
The
cross is a symbol for today's world. How many millions are forced
to bear the cross of injustice, poverty and war while the rest
of us look on without lifting a finger to help them. We must
not lay guilt on ourselves; but we must be aware of the complacency
which numbs our consciences.
Prayer Lord,
I have lived long enough to see the deaths of good friends and
family members I loved dearly. Without being maudlin, I know
that the days ahead will reveal other crosses which you will
ask me to bear. Help me to accept them with calm and hope, knowing
that you hold me as firmly as you once held the cross you carried.
