The Eighth Station:
Jesus comforts the women of Jerusalem

The theater of our earthly pilgrimage is sometimes a valley of tears. The daughters of Jerusalem weeping for our Saviour were reminded, as we are now, that they had reason to weep for themselves and their children.

Women along the way weep over his bloody appearance and Jesus, a dying man, is called on to console them! He warns them to weep not for him but for their children.

As Christians we are called to have compassion toward those who are abandoned, the "losers" of this world. And we are asked to express this compassion not simply by tears but by sharing from our abundance of food, riches and talents.

Prayer
Lord, at times I feel people pressing in on me with demands. They demand my time, attention, money. Sometimes they are those I know; at other times they are those from across the world whose faces I will never see. Help me to respond to their needs as well as I can, but remember, Lord, that my own needs are also great.
